We had to occupy as a teacher at first appointment in a very remote school in Sri Lanka. The principal gave us quarters. So, we had to buy meals from outside or to cook meals by ourselves. We were learnt boring lessons from the boarding houses, hostels etc.. So, we thought to cook. But we did not know how to cook.
We tried,. adding chilies, salt, and other ingredients on to the curry. But our meals were not tasty .Then we bought a recipe booklet and tried. Then asked other on cooking.
Now we can cook tasty. This was a good lesson for us.

I remember the first couple of times I tried my hand at cooking when I started living by my self. I added too much water in the rice which made it “beri bath” and I over cooked the the dhal to an extent where the “parippu eta” had all dissolved into the broth and it tasted terrible… hee hee. However, with trial and error my culinary skills have improved over the years though.
